Top tips to start your wedding dance floor (and keep it going!)

Starting a wedding dance floor is the easy part. The difficult task is keeping it going all night long. But with the right approach, you can ensure your wedding guests are dancing all night long. Here are some top tips to achieve that.

1. Play familiar songs

Start with songs that are recognised by your guests. This will encourage people to get onto the dance floor and make them feel comfortable. Nostalgia is always a great thing to tap into, as it unleashes the “dancing beast” within your guests that is guaranteed to generate some ripping dance moves.

2. Make it interactive

Throw a sax into the mix (or other live element such as a vocalist or percussion) to bring that something special to the event. This will create a more engaging dance floor.

3. Use dance floor lighting to create a party atmosphere

Dance floor lighting can be a huge motivator for guests to get up and dance, as when they come on it signals “it’s time to party!”.

4. Read the room

Be open to changing direction of the musical genre/style based on the demographic of the crowd. Are the parents hitting the dance floor? If so, venture into the 80s era. If guests are say in their 20s & 30s, hit up 90s/RnB or (if appropriate) a bit of house. My favourite is when guests of all ages are on the dance floor, in which case you can’t go wrong with sing-alongs that everyone will know.
